Have you seen a giraffe at the zoo? The giraffe is the tallest animal in the world. It can be three times taller than man! Its neck alone is 1.5 to 1.8 m i.e. the height of a man! It is also heavy! A male giraffe can weigh up to 1400kg i.e. as much as a truck!

And do you know which is the largest animal? The largest animal in the world lives in the sea. It is the blue whale. Its length is about 20 times the height of man. It is more than 1000 times heavier than man. It is also the loudest of animals and the sounds of a blue whale can be heard 800 km away!

But the blue whale lives in the oceans. What about land animals. Do you know which is the largest land animal? The African elephant is the largest land animal. It is about twice the height of man and more than 60 times heavier.

And do you know which is the fastest animal? The cheetah is the fastest animal. It can run as fast as a car on an express way! Cheetahs can attain speeds of up to 113 km / hr and they can accelerate from 0 to 113 km/hr in just a few seconds. They can go for 3-4 days without drinking water.

The ostrich is the largest bird in the world. Ostriches and penguins cannot fly because they have large heavy bodies and poorly developed wings.

The Starfish have 5 arms, radiating from a center. Sea anemones look like flowers, while jellyfish look like parachutes.

The wings of penguins and turtle are flipper like and used for swimming.

- The crocodile is able to stay underwater without breathing for about an hour. This is because they stay motionless and reduce their heart beat to 2 or 3 beats per minute in order to save energy.

During winter, some animals like bats, and bears hibernate in burrows or caves. Their body temperatures drop. Their hearts beat slower and they breathe slower too. They get the energy they need from fats stored in their bodies before winter.

There are a lot (about 3 million) kinds of living insects today!Are spiders insects? No the spider is not an insect. It is an arachnid because it has 4 pairs of legs, instead of 3 pairs. Insects have 6 legs, spiders and scorpions have 8 legs, prawns and crabs have 10 legs.

Animals use their tongue in many other ways than humans. Ant eaters catch ants on their sticky tongues and lizards catch insects with their long tongues.The giraffe has a very long tongue, more than 40 cms, which it uses with its lips to wrap around and break off leaves high up in trees.

Animals don't sweat like us. They have to eliminate excess body heat ion order to maintain a constant body temperature. Since they don't sweat like us, they pant.

Many snakes are not poisonous. Of the over 2400 different kinds of snakes now living. only about 8% are of the poisonous kind. There is a spitting cobra that can spray deadly venom from its fangs.They do not have teeth that can cut up food.All snakes shed their skins. Even the film that covers their eyes is cast off. The snakes removes it by rubbing against rough surfaces. The shedding occurs several times a year.

Can a snake be charmed? Snakes are deaf, so they cannot even hear the music which the snake charmer is playing. But they pick up vibrations with great sensitivity. The snake charmer moves so the snake too moves in order to keep him right before its eyes? This appears like dancing.

The hippopotamus means river horse, but its closest living relative is the pig! A big hippo can be 3.5 m long and weigh up to 3.5 tonnes. The hippo has the biggest mouth of any mammal, except the whale.

The peacock displays his beautiful feathers and dances to attract the female, 'peahen' during the mating season.

Tigers are members of the cat family.A group of tigers is known as an 'ambush' of tigers. Tigers usually hunt all alone at nighttime. They can run pretty fats too at speeds of up to 65 km/hr. They are also good swimmers.

Have you heard a lion roaring. The roar of a lion can be heard up to 8 km away! The females i.e., lionesses are better hunters than lions.
